THE EARLY YEARS
The Ludwig Quartet was formed in 1985 after brilliantly winning first prize at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. Following its foundation, the members of the Ludwig Quartet began honing their skills with Bruno Pasquier. They also benefited from suggestions and advice from conductor Sergiu Celibidache and from working with the Berg, Tokyo, Amadeus, LaSalle and Kolish quartets.
After winning several prizes at international competitions (Menuhin Foundation, Portsmouth Competition, Arthur Honegger Competition, Vittorio Gui Competition in Florence), the Ludwigs were invited to spend a year at the University of Yale with the Tokyo Quartet before becoming « Quartet in Residence » at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse of Paris.
OVER 30 YEARS OF CONCERTS AND PASSION
Over the years, the Ludwig Quartet has been invited to give concerts throughout the world at prestigious venues such as the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, the Opéra Comique, the Cité de la Musique, the Musée d’Orsay, the Orangerie de Sceaux, the Auditorium Cziffra in la Chaise-Dieu, the Wigmore Hall in London, the Merkin Hall in New-York, the Taipei National Theatre and the Shanghai National Theatre. The tours undertaken by the Quatuor Ludwig took them throughout Europe, Canada, Japan, New-Caledonia, Korea, the Middle East, Africa and India.
After such a distinguished career the founders of the Quatuor Ludwig were made Chevaliers dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
LEAVING THEIR MARK
The Quatuor Ludwig have a rich library of recordings which have won many awards notably the Grand Prix du Disque lyrique, the Grand Prix de l’Académie du Disque Français, the Grand Prix International du Disque de l’Académie Charles Cros and the Grand Prix du Midem. A recording of quartets No 1, 3 and 8 of Dmitri Shostakovitch was released in October 2011 under the Calliope label.
NEW HORIZONS AND NEW PATHS
Showing a keen interest in contemporary music the Quatuor Ludwig created numerous works in collaboration with Thierry Escaich, Philippe Hersant, Michael Levinas, Alain Louvier or Ivan Jevtic.
The Quatuor Ludwig values working with other noteworthy musicians including Abdel Rahman El Bacha, François-René Duchâble, Brigitte Engerer, Marie-Josèphe Jude, Anne Queféllec (piano), and Emmanuelle Bertrand (cello) or Christophe Gaugué (viola).
Since its formation, the Quatuor Ludwig has pioneered, planned and produced many concerts combining music and texts, with wonderful actors such as Marie-Christine Barrault, Michel Bouquet, Fanny Cottençon, Jean-François Balmer, Francois Marthouret, Didier Sandre or Nicolas Vaude. This specific type of work involving music and actors has also enabled the Quatuor Ludwig to reach out to a wider audience.
SHARE AND IMPART
When they are not performing, the Ludwig Quartet give numerous master classes and are involved in other educational projects leading to admission to the ‘conservatoires’, but also intended for the general public, new to the world of music. Their advice is sought by young professional quartets.
The musicians of the Quatuor Ludwig always share a love of chamber music which they promote passionately worldwide in the quest for ultimate perfection.
The Quatuor Ludwig thanks la Spedidam for their support.
